About this product

MICRO MATRIX
10 strains from the Bacillus group, 5 species · supported by organic nutrition

Give the life around your roots a place in your growing routine. Micro Matrix brings 10 bacterial strains together in a practical tablet with supporting organic fertilizer. Place it near the roots when potting or add it to established plants, without measuring out a separate microbial powder.

Why choose Micro Matrix?

  • A defined bacterial blend: 10 strains across 5 species, with the composition listed below.
  • Convenient tablet format: one tablet per 5 litres of soil in pots.
  • Supporting organic nutrition: an organic NPK component alongside the bacteria, not a replacement for managing your plant’s full nutrient requirements.
  • Developed with microbiology expertise: created by Maarten Casteleijn of Plant Potential together with Marco Breekweg of Microbac, specialists with their own strain bank. Every batch is checked for CFU before delivery.

Working with the root environment

The rhizosphere is the growing medium directly influenced by roots. Root exudates help shape the microbial community there, while microbial activity can affect nutrient availability. This is the environment Micro Matrix is designed for. Explore the plant’s microbial habitats to understand why placement near roots matters.

Some Bacillus strains produce enzymes and organic acids that help break down organic material or mobilise nutrients. Others have been studied for effects on root development. These functions are strain-specific: the species name or a high bacterial count alone does not establish what a finished product will do. Read How Do Bacillus Bacteria Help Plants? for the research behind these interactions.

Micro Matrix complements root-zone care rather than replacing it. Moisture, oxygen, temperature, substrate and existing microorganisms influence whether introduced bacteria establish and remain active. As explained in More Fertilizer, Less Uptake? The Roots Decide, supplying nutrients and enabling roots to acquire them are different things. Research on individual strains does not guarantee the same effects from this blend.

Which bacteria are inside?

Micro Matrix contains 10 strains from 5 species. Nine are Bacillus strains; Priestia megaterium was reclassified from Bacillus in 2020. Different strains of the same species can differ in their activity.

Species Number of strains
Bacillus subtilis 3
Bacillus licheniformis 2
Bacillus pumilus 2
Priestia megaterium (formerly Bacillus megaterium) 1
Bacillus amyloliquefaciens 2
Total 10

Each strain is present at approximately 10⁸ CFU (colony-forming units) per gram. CFU describes viable units that form colonies under test conditions, not a guaranteed level of activity around your roots.

Enzymes and their roles

The formulation’s enzyme information describes the following activities. Their expression in a growing medium depends on conditions.

  • Amylase: converts complex carbohydrates into sugars (active between pH 4.0 and 7.0).
  • Protease: breaks down proteins, especially relevant in organic feeding programmes.
  • Lipase: breaks down fats and oils.
  • Cellulase: breaks down cellulose, for example from dead roots and leaves, into sugars.
  • Xylanase: breaks down hemicellulose in plant material.
  • Tannase: breaks down tannins.
  • Urease: converts urea into ammonium, which plants can use or which can be converted further in soil.

Supported by organic nutrition

Each tablet also contains an organic NPK fertilizer. Nutrients are released gradually, for up to 12 months depending on conditions. This release period is not a guarantee that the bacteria remain active for the same duration.

How to use

  • Repotting: place the tablet about 2–3 cm deep under the plant, cover with some soil and then place the plant.
  • Established plants: push the tablet 2–5 cm into the soil, as close to the plant as possible, or spread several tablets around the plant. They dissolve on their own with watering.
  • Sowing: place the tablet 4–5 cm deep, cover with soil and sow directly above. For a row or furrow, you can crumble or break the tablet.
  • Watering can: let a tablet dissolve in your watering can (about 10 minutes), stir well and water as usual.

Dosage: one tablet per 5 litres of soil in pots. Follow the label for use in open ground.

10 tablets per pack · Shelf life: 24 months

Precautions

Avoid ingestion and contact with the eyes. In case of eye contact, remove contact lenses if applicable and rinse thoroughly with water for several minutes. If swallowed, rinse the mouth and seek medical help. Keep out of reach of children.
